Protecting software is something that concerns every developer. Making it usable only with a registration key is a good way to protect it and trial periods will ensure that a costumer may test it before buying it. If you create an application and wish to protect it, ASProtect is the tool to use. It features a user friendly interface which makes the whole process easy and fast.

The download will take up almost 2 Mb of disk space which should not be much even for the slowest Internet connection available. Installing it on your computer is a straightforward task. After a few simple steps, the wizard will start the process and it will take a few seconds to complete.

Protecting an application with ASProtect is like going through a wizard, but instead of Next and Back buttons, you will find navigation tabs. First, you need to name your project, select an application's .exe file and set an output path. You can also add other types of files, such as .dll, .ocx or .scr. Options for compression, protection and others can be found under the second tab. You can enable an anti-debugger protection, chekcsum, resources or advanced import protections and many more. These can be enabled with the aid of simple check boxes.

ASProtect lets you create registration keys as well. This feature is available under the third tab, where you can find two dialog boxes. You can type your registration information in the left box and a hardware ID below it. Clicking the large Generate button on the bottom part of the window will display the result in the left dialog box. If a registration key is stolen, it can be blacklisted. The Stolen Keys button will bring up a small window where you can add keys to a list.

The fourth tab on the interface will display options for setting up a trial period. By using a series of check boxes, you can specify how many days should the trial last, the maximum number of executions allowed, a reminder message, an expiration date and others. To apply these settings to an application, you need to click the Go button, under the fourth tab. The process will not take long and the targeted file will be protected according to your specifications.

Pros

ASProtect offers some good solutions for protecting an application. Making use of its options is easy and the overall process is fast.

Cons

The software could have used a better organized help file. With ASProtect's easy to understand features, you can protect your applications by setting up registration keys or trial periods in a few simple steps.
